Is the cat a Russian Blue, by any chance? The color is very much like the cat I had as a child. He was that color all over and had emerald-colored eyes. In the morning fog and dew, he seemed almost silver. He would seem to magically appear through the grey fog. He was the most self-possessed animal I think I've ever seen.
The cat is a British Shorthair.
